A Defaulted Student Loan

A defaulted student loan is not a good thing to have. When you miss more than one or two payments n your student loans, the student loan company will notify you of your late payments. Should this continue, your account will be placed on hold and you will be recorded as having a default student loan. Once your student loan is defaulted, your credit history will be flagged, and your payments will be placed on hold until you can get your payments current again.

With a defaulted student loan, you should be aware that the interest will continue to be added to your principal balance, even though your account is still on hold. It is important that you make these late payments as quickly as possible to minimize the amount of interest that will be added to the loan balance. However, even when you pay back the late payments, your credit history will still be flagged.

Having a default student loan will affect your credit in the future. When you go to buy a house, a car, or to take out another loan, you will either be denied or receive a higher interest rate than you otherwise would have gotten. Also, you should be aware that having a defaulted student loan will inevitably mean that you will have more to pay in the long run.
